We begin our day by unpacking and working on various tabletop activities until 8:15 a.m. We officially begin our school day with morning prayers and then go into a special or circle time, where we review the months of the year, days of the week, current date, current year, seasons, shapes, weather, jobs, patterns, and work on phonemic awareness (letters and sounds). We sing many songs and incorporate movement into our circle time.
Then, we work on a subject and do different activities that have been prepared for that lesson. We have a letter of the week, a number of the week, and a color that we work on that goes along with our language arts curriculum. We use the starter program to the “Superkids” program that our school uses from kindergarten until 2nd grade. The program used in Pre-K is called “Happily Ever After,” which focuses on following directions, comprehension skills, book handling skills, patterns, letter recognition activities, vocabulary/conceptual development, and fine motor skills. Students attend our “specials” once every day for 30 minutes. The “specials” for Pre-K include computer, library, music, art, and PE.
We have our snack and bathroom break and then go into another lesson for that day. Throughout our lessons, we sing many songs and get up to move, which is essential for learning at this age. In the morning before recess, the students pick a center to play at for thirty minutes. We begin our afternoon with a 30-minute recess. After recess, we have a 30-minute lunch before our rest time. Every student has his or her own rest mat that is used daily from about 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Once rest time is over, students move to their afternoon developmental center. Developmental centers are extremely important for this age because students are able to work with their friends on socialization, team building, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and having fun!
Your student must have turned four years old before September 1st and must be fully potty-trained in order to attend Pre-K at St. Peter’s School. It is great to have your child practice independent skills appropriate for their age, such as zipping a zipper, using the bathroom independently, and using their words to express if they need help.
